Labor Department Updates Guidance on Work Authorization Verification

Secretary Chavez-DeRemer says new guidance implements an executive order that limits access to federal workforce services by unauthorized immigrants.

The Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration has issued updated guidance requiring all federally funded workforce development programs to verify individuals’ legal work authorization before providing services. This directive is part of the implementation of the president’s executive order restricting federal benefits from supporting illegal immigration.

The new policy replaces guidance from the previous administration and applies to a broad range of employment and training programs, including those under the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), YouthBuild, and the National Farmworker Jobs Program.

“Our updated guidance makes clear that taxpayer-funded workforce services are reserved for individuals who are authorized to work in the United States, as required by federal law. By ensuring these programs serve their intended purpose, we’re protecting good-paying jobs for American workers and reaffirming this Administration’s commitment to securing our borders and ending illegal immigration,” said Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer.

  • For discernment for Secretary Chavez-DeRemer as she heads the Labor Department.
  • For the president and members of his Cabinet as they prioritize federal programs and services for U.S. citizens and legal immigrants.
